We want to start a social networking web site and want to pass this idea around to some web hosting companies but do not want the idea stolen. HOW can we protect this from happening

Copy-right/Patent.

Non-Disclosure Agreement [NDA]
-
Research/Investigate the web-hosting companies.
– Once you decide where you want your site, get it on the net FAST.
– - "Great" ideas occur to TWO or MORE groups at a time.

not sure how much it would cost, but you can try to get a NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement), in which the peeps you talk to, can’t talk to anyone else about what info you give them. but if it is a potential IP (Intellectual Property) idea you might want to patent it.
