Where do web hosting companies get domain from?

November 13th, 2010 | by admin |

Companies like 1and1 and fasthosts. where do they get the domain names from to then sell them on to customers.

They don’t get the domain names from anybody. They just register them if they are available.

    they probably buy them from a Tier 1 provider, which then registers them with ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers).

    ICANN accredited registrars register the domains from the ICANN database for a fee of about $7.

    If you are wanting to sell domain names, it costs about $2,500 just to submit the application then $4,000 a year if you get accepted. You also need to have about $70,000 in liquid funds (sitting in a bank) and a half million dollar liability insurance policy.
    It would much cheaper to become a reseller with WildWestDomains (GoDaddy), ResellerClub (Directi), or eNom.

    There are almost 900 ICANN Accredited registrar’s who are actually allowed to book the domain names. Most big companies are registrar’s themselve or taking domains from any of these 900 Companies.

    You will get actuall name of registrar when you do a whois search on domain

    Check whois on :: http://www.whois.sc

    Through ICANN, domain names can be registered and resold. So hosting companies are a resellers, and get domain names from ICANN accredited registrars, or they are ICANN accredited resellers
