Are all web design companies clueless?

October 20th, 2010

Are web design companies generally clueless about sales, negotiation, customer service and revenue streams? Do most really think the whole population knows nothing about developing websites and databases? How does someone say that it takes two days to build an e-mail form? What rubbish!

I have never met such a bunch of entrepreneurially challenged people in my life. Has anyone ever found a serious, professional web design business that relies on more than just technical ability to stay afloat?

Haha. I think that your critique of most Web Design companies focusing more on technical abilities and not enough on "sales, negotiation, customer service" is absolutely accurate and fair.

On the other hand, any technical consulting work will always take more time than if you (or an in house colleague) did it. Two days for implementing a new page or form is a fast job, even if it’s technically simple. I have worked as a Web Designer/Developer in the past and clients often don’t understand the work that really goes into seemingly small changes, or why a consultant (with several projects) can’t be at their beck and call at any time.

Does web hosting companies matter in the quality of a website?

October 17th, 2010

I need my website to run smoother and load faster and not freeze with many guest . I have flash and videos play at the same time, can a better hosting company make the difference ?

Hi

Yeah, definitely, good webhost coompany will help you make sure that your website has 99% UPTIME and also loads way faster.

Previously i used free hosting, in it, my website loaded slower and also validation mail to the people who tried to register came after 10-15 mins.

But after i got paid hosting, my website loads way faster and validation emails comes up in matter of seconds.

Why do companies create web pages that load for hours?

October 11th, 2010

Why do companies continue to create web pages that load for hours, subject us to bad music and motion graphics that provide absolutely no information? Nobody wants to sit through a pencil sketch animation on the Leo Burnett site.
My equipment or connection speed is not the problem. I am a designer.

They forget that not everyone has a direct T1 line to the backbone… I am sure it is NOT intentional. There are many factors at work here. The most limiting link between you and them is what controls the speed of your connection. Maybe you have a slow link somewhere in the chain from you to them. Maybe it is software that YOU are running on YOUR machine! Scripts that run from a remote server are notorious for being bandwidth hogs and make it LOOK like you have a slow connection speed, especially if they are "preloading" image files. Preloading is where no image is displayed until ALL images on the page are loaded. Usually, you will see images appear one at a time if there is NO preloading being done. Flash is really BAD when it comes to this. The WHOLE flash file has to load before anything appears to happen and these thigns get huge fast. MANY people forget this when creating the file. It works really fast on a local drive even though it is a huge file. Then they upload it to a site and everyone suffers a long wait time. It is the rare programmer who tests the site for access speed for a typical user with a remote connection. My friends used to rag on me because I always tested the site from a remote location to see how it responded to a typical user. They thought it a waste of time to test remotely when you could test the local server directly from the same room.

Open a command window and type this at the prompt:

tracert microsoft.com

Put the domain in that you are interested in instead of microsoft as I used. What you will see is a list with 4 columns The first three are of interest. These are times in milliseconds for how long it takes to communicate with that place listed in the 4th column, relative to you. The actual numbers are not critical, but what IS, is the relative values. If you see one which is quite large compared to the rest, THAT is the slowest link in the chain. Note that you can use a specific IP address instead of a domain name. Note also that you have absolutely NO control over ANY of the intermediate links, so TRACERT is strictly for information as you really can’t actually DO anything to change anything you see.

By offering Web application security to their customers, hosting providers can earn additional revenue while significantly reducing their complaint handling and abuse recovery efforts.

With the dotDefender Web application security solution, shared and dedicated hosting providers can protect their customers’ websites from many types of application-based attacks, such as SQL injection, cross-site scripting, path traversal, and defacement. By installing dotDefender, hosting providers can offer Web application security as a service to their hosted sites, increasing revenues with minimal investment.
